Cris Waller: Because Veterans Advisory Council had 'temerity to stand up to him,' elected official wants the board disbanded

Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull has no business being a commissioner. First he published dozens of Facebook posts denigrating Muslim Americans, immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ folks and other marginalized groups.

At the same time, he participated in rallies where he spoke Cris Walleralongside people like hate preachers who condemned the LGBTQ community; Patriot Prayer founder Joey Gibson, who faces federal charges of riot incitement; and the Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate group Proud Boys.

Then he met with a few religious leaders who attempted to educate him, but still claimed at a Board of County Commissioners meeting that: "The Muslim community believes that the Koran and its provisions for Sharia law is the only way that good government can be achieved. … The Muslim leadership believes that national borders are wrong and that open borders should be implemented."

Funny how he can speak for all Muslim individuals! And not so funny that his deeply entrenched, fossilized biases show no ability to change.

And now, because the Veterans Advisory Council had the temerity to stand up to him and tell him how his actions had harmed them and our community, he wants the board disbanded. Shooting the messenger is the order of the day.

Unfortunately, Oregon state law does not give us a way to remove him until he has been in office for six months. But come July, we all need to ensure he is removed. Visit recallmarkshull.com to learn more.

Cris Waller is a resident of Jennings Lodge in unincorporated Clackamas County.
