Patrick Smith: Commissioner's recall justified because he was 'elected without his failings being commonly known.'

Comments submitted by Mr. Bill Wehr in the May 5 edition of the Clackamas Review seem fragmented and simply delusional.

Foremost is the attempt to make a connection in the severity of Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull's self-demonstrated unfitness for his job, and the alleged misuse of emails by County Commissioner Sonya Fischer. If as Wehr states, Fischer did something wrong in her use of personal/county email, or in accepting political contributions, she should be held accountable.

I do not believe that there is any intention to, as Mr. Wehr posits, "overturn an elected official because they don't like his politics." There will most likely be an attempt to recall Commissioner Shull after he has been in office for six months, as the law allows. That is not an attempt to overturn, but to recall a politician clearly unfit for his position and elected without his failings being commonly known.

Wehr's reference to not liking his "politics" is asinine. Politics in America must be the absence of demonstrated bigotry, homophobia and transphobia, or being outspoken in the demonization of various religious and ethnic groups. Though not charged or convicted, Shull has also been involved in an instance of domestic violence. While Shull can hold these opinions, they fly in the face of his support of the constitution, which guarantees liberty and justice for all.

There is an old adage that actions speak louder than words. In addition to Mr. Shull's apology, I would be far more interested in his actions to repair the damage he has done than a lukewarm statement of contrition. All American political entities can and must do better that to elect people like Mark Shull.

Patrick Smith is a resident of Gladstone.
