'Librarians' checks out state park
Last week at Milo McIver State Park, a water tower was temporarily transformed into a witch's hut.
The switch came about while TNT's Electric Entertainment series "The Librarians" was filming at the park.
"It's always exciting when we can take the show outside," said Bobby Warberg, location manager for the television show. "The majority of our locations are built on our stages, and (the characters are) looking for artifacts in confined spaces. When we have a chance to take the show outside, it adds a different look."
When filming at outside locations, the cast and crew are drawn to Milo McIver State Park because of the variety of aesthetics it offers.
"It's a beautiful park," Warberg said. "It has lots of different looks. There are rivers, forests and parking lots."
Over the course of three days, the cast and crew filmed "The Librarians and the Trial of the One" in the park. The penultimate installment of the show's fourth season and the show's 41st episode overall, it is tentatively scheduled to air in January or February 2018.
"The Librarians and the Trial of the One" finds the show's main characters in the woods "for multiple reasons," though the majority of the plot details are kept under wraps.
Warberg added that the need for wooded land was one element that drew them to the park for this particular episode.
"If the script calls for a forest, we're at Milo McIver," he said. "(It's) one of our most featured locations."
During one of the episode's other scenes, a main character is transported through a magic door and becomes part of a prison chain gang, which was shot in the parking lot near the Park Office.
"We turned the road into a construction zone and used pieces from a Nike track," Warberg explained.
A spinoff of the movie franchise of the same title, "The Librarians" stars Christian Kane, Lindy Booth, John Harlan Kim, Rebecca Romijn, John Larroquette and Noah Wyle. Warberg described the series as a mix of "Indiana Jones" and "Doctor Who."
"It's all about the magic in the world," he said. "Bad people are trying to find it, and (the team is) trying to protect the magical artifacts by keeping them in a magic library."
Thus far during its four-year tenure, "The Librarians" has been filmed in downtown Estacada twice and Milo McIver State Park five times. Previous filming in Estacada saw the explosion of a car and the creation of a bar in the Safari Club.
Other popular locations for the show include downtown Oregon City and the site of the former Blue Heron Paper Mill, also in Oregon City.
The show's offices and stages are located in Clackamas, and the team likes to stay within Clackamas County whenever possible.
"The Librarians" season four premieres later this year.
