Annual group show at the Spiral Gallery offers handmade art, gifts during December

FILE PHOTO - Am Griswold of the Spiral Gallery made these holiday decorations for last December's annual group show.

Artists at the Spiral Gallery are encouraging people to ring in the holiday season with handmade gifts.

Gallery members will host their annual Holiday Gift Show, with items under $100, during the month of December. There will be a reception for the show from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, at the gallery, 341 Broadway St. The event will also feature a raffle for a $25 gift certificate to the gallery.

Gallery members have made everything from cards and holiday ornaments to wind charms and jewelry.

Nina Bradford, an artist at the gallery, enjoys seeing the creations of her fellow artists, and how they interpret the idea of holiday gifts. The show typically offers a wide variety of art.

"I like seeing how everyone interprets it in a different way," she said. "It shows how creativity is an individual thing. Everyone has their own little spark, but it's all under the same umbrella. It's fun to see it expressed in different ways."

Bradford said that handmade items make great gifts.

"It's nice to give something and receive something handmade," she said. "Time and hands have gone into it. It's not just something off of a conveyor belt and being produced over and over again."

She added that the December First Friday reception is always particularly fun.

"It's the holiday time of year, and it's a great party," she said. "People are coming in and seeing what everyone made. It's a celebration of the year that's come to pass."
