The four decades that DC Malone spent as a comedian ensures that his musical sets are never without a lighthearted twist.
"The comedy comes out when I play. I'll launch into a song introduction, and it turns out humorous," he said.
From 8:30-11 p.m. Saturday, March 14, DC Malone and the Jones will play at The Cazadero, 352 S.E. Highway 224.
"Music has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember," Malone said, noting that he switched to performing music full time when he connected with the members of his current band. "I sat in with bands and had side gigs, and I finally met these guys and said 'this is what I want to do.'"
Malone shares the stage with guitarist Derek Dogget, bass player Dale Turnbull and drummer Todd Mahan. The band covers everything from swing and blues to rock and country music.
"I call us the most original cover band in Portland," Malone said. "We don't want to be the band that's doing the same songs all the time. (Our songs) are very eclectic, and always fun. We play stuff we know people will like but might not be familiar with. In a way, it's a learning experience."
They strive to engage audiences during their shows.
"I've seen bands play and become human jukeboxes in the background. We want to have the crowd be part of what we're doing," he said. "We like getting people involved and engaged with the lyrics. When you bring people into what you do, that's always fun."
Malone is looking forward to playing in Estacada, noting that he has several traditional Irish songs and toasts planned for the event.
"Playing for new people is always great," he said.
