Estacada's got talent
Dazzling audiences with magic tricks, choreographing dances and making French press coffee are just a few of the skills that Clackamas River Elementary Students showcased during an online talent show.
More than 80 students submitted videos for the event, which was facilitated through the video sharing website Flipgrid during the week of May 25.
Those involved think the show was a good opportunity for students to connect with one another while participating in distance learning during the COVID-19 outbreak.
"Performances were canceled, and I wanted to find a way for students to express themselves and be creative," said music teacher Rebekah Vogt, who coordinated the talent show. "It was such a joy to see the students' videos. Each one is so unique."
Second grader Emma Gaylor said she had fun playing "Old Mother Hubbard" on piano.
"(The best part about playing piano is) when you practice a song for a long time and you finally get to use it on something, like a talent show," she added.
Fifth grader Olivia Greene, who choreographed a dance to "Burn The House Down" by AJR, was excited that the talent show continued even after school buildings were closed.
"It was cool because my friends and I had already planned out our talents. It was fun watching what they wanted to do," she said. "It was really cool that the whole school got to be involved. Usually it's just fourth and fifth graders."
"I liked the different selection. A lot of people did a lot of unexpected things," added Porter Casey, a fourth grader who sang a duet of "Rose" with her mother.
Vogt was happy to see such high participation in the talent show, which she credited to administrators and fellow teachers at Clackamas River Elementary helping spread the word.
"It's a great way for (the students) to get the spotlight for a few minutes and feel special," she said.
