Junior American state tournament
HILLSBORO — Estacada's Junior American baseball team advanced to the state tournament before running out of steam with back-to-back losses in Hillsboro last week.
The Rangers fell out of contention after a 13-7 loss to Seaside in an elimination game Friday morning.
Seaside set the tone for a high-scoring game with five runs in its first at-bats.
Estacada answered with four runs in its half of the inning, capped when James Durand singled and eventually slid home on a wild pitch.
It would remain a tight one-run game before Seaside gained some breathing room with a three-run fourth inning, while retiring holding Estacada scoreless in back-to-back innings.
The Rangers started the tournament with a 7-1 loss to Stayton the previous day.
"This is a great group of kids, and they performed well to be one of the 12 teams still playing at state," Estacada coach John James said. "Getting that kind of experience now, hopefully takes away some of the nerves and makes state the expectation as these kids move toward high school."
