GLADSTONE — Both sides were spinning their wheels early before Gladstone dug in to score a 42-22 win over Estacada in Friday's clash of contenders to begin the Special District 2 league season.

The teams traded four straight three-and-outs to start the game, but the Gladiators were winning the kicking battle and took over on Estacada's side of the field to begin their third drive.

Gladstone scored when Mason Scheehean zipped around the right side and slipped inside the pylon from 4 yards out.

The Gladiators would score seconds late when Austin Conner returned a fumble 16 yards to the end zone.

Gladstone would build a 28-0 lead early in the third quarter.

Estacada (3-1) hosts No. 3-ranked Woodburn (4-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at Buzz Randall Stadium.
