WRESTLERS SCORE 53 POINTS AT STATE
PORTLAND — Estacada's wrestling team picked up eight wins at last weekend's 4A state tournament at Memorial Coliseum.
Senior Hunter Gotchall was the only Ranger to make the podium, winning his first three bouts to place second in the heavyweight bracket. He spent a total of 7 minutes, 14 seconds of mat time to flatten his first three opponents before dropping an 11-3 major decision to the No. 2 seed Mikey Sierra out of Henley in Saturday's title bout.
Lance Moser reached the semifinals at 195 pounds, opening the tournament with a first-round pin over Sweet Home's Austin Olin, tripping out his opponent 40 seconds into the bout and finishing with a fall.
"I caught him pushing in and was able to get to his legs," Moser said.
The Estacada senior followed with a pin over No. 5 seed Taylen Kirkadle out of Henley with 0:31 seconds left.
Sam Garrison used an escape and a takedown to build a 3-0 lead through the first two periods of his opening 152-pound bout against Siuslaw's Ryan Jennings, then earned a fall with 1:07 left.
"I just stayed calm, kept a level head and listened to my coaches," Garrison said. "I was able to work from the top, catch an arm and turn him."
Garrison dropped an overtime decision in the quarterfinals and battled back to score a 10-6 decision in his first consolation bout.
Dylan Adcock (182) score an opening-minute pin in his first consolation bout.
Estacada tallied 53 team points to finish 12th in the team standings — one spot behind Tri-Valley foe Molalla.
