Estacada girls take 12th at state track
GRESHAM — The Estacada girls track and field team totaled 21 points to finish 12th at the 4A state championship meet last weekend at Mt. Hood Community College.
Estacada junior Makaelyn Jennings highlighte the meet Friday with a win in the javelin.
Jennings strained her arm during a heavy throwing day early in the week and didn't pick up an implement in the two days leading up to the meet.
"I don't like to leave practice until I get off a good throw, and I made more throws than I could count that day," Jennings said. "I missed a few days of practice and wasn't sure what to expect coming into today."
She quickly answered any doubts with a winning throw of 139-feet-11-inches on her first trip down the runway.
"It only takes one throw," Jennings said. "My mind was clear, and I hit every little detail on that first one."
She would finish the competition with two of the three longest throws.
Jennings returned Saturday and finished eighth in the shot put (34-5.25).
Cheyenne Abbett finished 11th in Friday's 3,000-meter race, which separated into three distinct packs two laps into the race. Abbett spent most of the race pacing the rear pack that included league foe Brynn Tatom from Gladstone and La Grande's Abby Crews. Abbett stretched it out over the final two laps to leave the other two runners in her wake.
Estacada's other big points came from a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter relay (50.79) early in Saturday's sessions.
Ranger's sprinter Faith Grainger took sixth in the 200 (26.15) and was seventh in the 100 (12.84). She had Friday's top qualifying time in the 200.
In the boys meet, senior David Stamm found himself buried in 11th place on the leaderboard early in the javelin competition before he unleashed a throw of 151-10 on his third attempt to claim the final spot into the finals. He was unable to improve his mark on any of his three bonus throws and finished ninth — six inches from a place on the podium.
