MILWAUKIE — The Estacada all-stars surrendered the first run of the game, but answered the bell and took a 6-3 win over Mill City in its opener at the Minor National state tournament Friday at North Clackamas Park.

Mill City saw its second batter of the game reach on a single and cycle around the bases for an early lead. But Estacada killed the rally when Kallen Davis scooped up a ground ball and beat the hitter in a foot race to first base, and Hank Wheeler caught a pop up at shortstop for the third out.

The Rangers answered in their first at-bats when lead-off hitter Grant Leavenworth got on base after being hit by a pitch. He came home several batters later on a sacrifice ground ball by Zander Hulsey.

Estacada went in front for good with a three-run spurt in the second inning that saw Wheeler send a two-run triple down the left-field line, followed by Carter Hamilton's sacrifice grounder to first base.

After striking out the side in the second inning, Jacob Duke Durand moved into the field for the next inning, gobbled up a ground ball and tagged out Mill City's lead runner for a key out at third base.

Estacada extended to a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the third when Leavenworth sent a hopper past three Mill City gloves and into left field for a lead-off triple. Matthew Greenup was next to the plate sending a blooper to center field for an RBI-single.

Davis went to the mound in the fourth inning and retired both batters he faced in the inning, gloving a hopper on the mound and tossing to first base to strand a Mill City runner at third.

Estacada did not let the tying run out of the on-deck circle in the fifth and final inning. Wheeler cleanly fielded a two-hopper at shortstop and fired across the infield to end the game.

Estacada fell to Westview in the semifinals Saturday morning and was knocked out of contention with an 8-7 loss to Monroe later in the day.
