Estacada girls tennis doubles team wins district championship
It was a dream run for an Estacada tennis doubles team as the pair upset top-seeded duos to hoist the district trophy and punch an unexpected ticket to state.
Ranger seniors Maria Portillo de Mueller and Ana Garica Munoz ran the table at the 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 2 Tennis Tournament Friday, May 13, at the Salem Tennis Club. In the course of play they defeated the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 seeded teams, leaving bracketologists scratching their heads.
In the championship match they swept Cascade's Natalee Federico and Kenna Coleman in a pair of 6-0 sets, in what proved to be the smoothest victory of the day.
To get to the finale, they first beat North Marion's T Christenson and Z Diaz 6-0, 6-0; Philomath's Nadia Durski and Lorelei Schell 6-1, 6-1; Cascade's Ariel Tobiasson and Marilyn Suelzle 4-6, 6-4, 6-2; and Philomath's K Bacho and Phoebe Dodson 6-3, 6-3.
Both the round 4 match against Tobiasson and Suelzle, and the semifinals versus Bacho and Dodson were hotly contested affairs marked by long rallies and back-and-forth play.
Now the unseeded team of Portillo de Mueller and Garica Munoz will look to crash the party at state and secure a few more upsets.
