Hydrate for Better Workouts
We know that dehydration can make us tired. But did you know dehydration can actually make it harder to exercise HYPERLINK "www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2838466/"? Your body's ability to regulate heat is impaired when it's thirsty which causes body temperature and heart rate to rise, making you feel tired.
Dehydration also weakens your mental function, affecting your motor control, decision making and concentration. You need to focus when working out to maintain your form and count the reps!
When your body is dehydrated, your stomach also passes food into the small intestine more slowly than normal. This can cause your stomach to hurt.
Drinking water before your work out gives you a head start and gives you something to sweat. Once you are working out, keep drinking. By the time you feel thirsty you are already low on fluids. So drink before you are thirsty for maximum efficiency.
Drink after your workout to replenish what you have lost. If you want to know exactly how much fluid you have lost, weigh yourself before and after your workout. If you weigh less when you are finished, you know you have lost 16 ounces of water for every pound lighter.
What is the best way to rehydrate? Water, the elixir of life, is cheap, available and nature's perfect gift to the thirsty. 90 minutes or less water is fine. For a longer or more intense workout in hot conditions, consider a supplemental drink or some delicious amino acids to replace electrolytes.
