Huh? It's hot outside but cool inside The Gym. Use your indoor time to increase your resistance or strength workout.

Strength exercise, or resistance training, works your  muscles by using, tada, resistance; like dumbbells or weight machines. Resistance exercise increases lean muscle mass, important for weight loss, because lean muscle burns more calories. Weight loss can lead to muscle loss, so it's important to do resistance training to keep that muscle.

People lose muscle mass as they age, so resistance is important for older adults. Having strong muscles makes it easier to do everyday activities, like gardening or taking your suitcase out of an overhead bin on an airplane.

Lifting weights, using resistance bands, doing push-ups, pull-ups, crunches, leg squats or push-ups and using weight machines at a gym are all resistance exercises. Nate or any of The Gym's trainers can help you with these so you use the correct form.

Doing strength training twice a week will increase your lean muscle mass, increase bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Your increased metabolism will help with weight loss or weight maintenance and your increased muscle strength will make everyday activities easier. You will also reduce your blood sugar levels and improve your sensitivity to insulin, avoiding diabetes. What's not to love?
