It will be at least seven months before the City of Banks hires a permanent city manager, according to a rough timeline adopted by city councilors last week.

Banks City Recorder Jolynn Becker stepped into the job on an interim basis after former manager Kyle Awesome left town in November just as the Forest Grove Leader was raising questions about his resume.

At the Dec. 11 city council meeting , councilors discussed their next steps. Although a number of people have already applied for the position, councilors said they need to publicize the post and decide on a screening process. Options discussed included hiring a company to help, using a computer program to weed out those who do not meet minimum requirements, and forming sub-committees to personally screen applicants.

If Becker wants to continue in the position, she will likely have to apply along with everyone else. The council also mentioned showing preference to candidates from the Pacific Northwest.

During its last search process, the city hired the League of Oregon Cities to do a background check on the finalists for the job. The League has since refunded the city’s money — more than $6,000 — which will be used for the upcoming hiring.

Becker has been learning the ropes and picking up projects Awesome dropped when he left. So far, she said, things have been going well and she appreciates everyone who has stepped up to help in the transition.
