Extreme heat is expected to slow light rail and commuter trains, but riders won't need to pay on Wednesday.

HILLSBORO TRIBUNE PHOTO: CHRIS OERTELL - A light rail train nears the Orenco Station platform earlier this year. TriMet announced trains and busses would be free on Wednesday, Aug. 2, thanks to a technical glitch.Due to technical issues, riders can use TriMet for free today, Wednesday, Aug. 2.

The systemwide glitch stems from problems with the fare systems, notably the recently activated Hop Fastpass system which is supposed to allow users easy access to TriMet busses and trains. The rider support call center and digital information displays are also out of commission.

The free rides apply to busses and MAX Light Rail lines across the Portland area.

The glitch comes as light rail trains are expected to experience delays due to extreme heat. The metal rails can buckle in high heat and prolonged heat can cause the light rail system's overhead wires to droop.

TriMet announced the WES commuter trains, which run from Beaverton to Wilsonville, will not be running on Wednesday afternoon, also due to extreme heat.
