The driver, 45, was transported to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in stable condition.

The Chevy SUV was traveling eastbound when witnesses say he drifted off the right shoulder of the road, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The SUV rolled over multiple times, crossing over into the oncoming lane and coming to rest on the shoulder of the westbound lane. A woman passing by — also an employee at a Portland veterinarian clinic — heard the man voicing concern about the parakeet traveling with him. First responders located the parakeet still in its cage. The woman evaluated the bird and took it for safe keeping until the bird could be reunited with its owner.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
