U.S. Coast Guard discovers Robert Lawrence Zimmel floating in the water with a McMinnville companion

Robert Lawrence Zimmel, 69, was found floating in the water near the body of another man, 81-year-old James William Warren of McMinnville, according to Oregon State Police Lt. Cari Boyd.

Someone from a private boat contacted the U.S. Coast Guard at around 4:52 p.m. to report a capsized boat and an unresponsive male floating in the water.

The Coast Guard sent a motor lifeboat to recover Zimmel's body and continued to search the area. Eventually, the crew of a Coast Guard helicopter spotted Warren's body floating nearby. Warren was the registered owner of the boat, according to Boyd.

An Oregon State Police investigation determined Zimmel and Warren were the only two occupants of the boat when it capsized. It's not clear why the boat capsized and law officers are still investigating that, although there was no evidence of foul play, according to Boyd.

Neither Zimmel nor Warren were wearing life vests when they were recovered, Boyd stated.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, McMinnville Police Department and Forest Grove Police Department assisted with the investigation.
