Forest Grove and Gaston high school students have opportunity to compete in American Legion scholarship competition

Forest Grove's American Legion Post members are inviting students from Forest Grove and Gaston high schools to participate in the annual Oratorical Scholarship competition.

Scholarship awards range from $100 at the local level to $18,000 at the national level. Participants can potentially advance through four levels of competition.

The first competition will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, and the second competition will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, at the American Legion Post, 2003 21st Ave. in Forest Grove. The third will be held at Post 150, 8329 S.E. 89th Ave. in Portland on Saturday, Feb. 3. The final Oregon contest is on Saturday, March 3, in the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs building in Salem.

The winner of the Oregon contest will advance to the finals in Indianapolis, Ind.

The contests require participants to prepare eight- to 10-minute orations on some phase of the Constitution of the United States and a three- to five-minute oration on one of four amendments to the Constitution.

All high school students — public, private and home schooled — are eligible.
