Roadwork is continuing on the north-south thoroughfare in Cornelius. The full closure begins May 14.

STAFF PHOTO: MARK MILLER - Construction crews work at the intersection of 10th Avenue and Baseline Street in Cornelius on Tuesday morning, May 1.Motorists on 10th Avenue and Baseline Street in Cornelius have already been dealing with intermittent disruptions for some time. But the project, which started early last year, will enter a new phase Monday, May 14, as 10th Avenue closes at Baseline Street for an estimated one month.

The closure is expected to last from May 14 to June 16, according to construction signage.

A temporary detour has been set up along Alpine Street, just south of Baseline Street, for traffic coming northbound during much of the day. But once the closure is fully in effect, according to the Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation, northbound traffic will be diverted along South Heather Street, while southbound traffic will have a detour on North Holladay Street.

The 10th Avenue improvements are a Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation project. The county is widening 10th Avenue in between the railroad crossing south of Baseline Street and Holladay Street several blocks to the north.

The reconstruction of 10th Avenue is being done to contemporary "complete streets" standards, including bicycle lanes and sidewalks on both sides of the street, as well as a center turn lane and "bulb-out" curb extensions designed for pedestrian safety and to encourage drivers to slow down. New lights and signage are being installed as well.

The $8 million project is being funded through Washington County's Major Streets Transportation Improvement Program, or MSTIP.

Melissa De Lyser, a Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation spokeswoman, told the News-Times earlier this year that project completion is expected this fall.

In the Cornelius area, 10th Avenue is an important thoroughfare, as the road continues south of town to Tongue Lane as Golf Course Road, and it extends north as Cornelius-Schefflin Road to Verboort and Zion Church roads.STAFF PHOTO: MARK MILLER - Crystal Makin, a flagger with IMN Traffic Specialties, waves a semi-truck and trailer through a section of 10th Avenue just south of Baseline Street that is currently one-way. A detour for northbound traffic has been set up along Alpine Street.

Editor's note: An original version of this story misstated the estimated length of the closure. It will be just over one month. The story has also been updated with more information on the expected detour routes, which are South Heather Street south of the closure and North Holladay Street north of the closure, according to the Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation.
