Hillsboro's heat wave prompted officials to cancel the event for the safety of both the animals and their owners.

Hays Animal Shelter's annual Dogs on Parade event has been cancelled due to the heat, originally scheduled to be held tonight, Tuesday, July 24.

The parade, which is the shelter's only fundraiser of the year, was scheduled to coincide with the Hillsboro Tuesday Night Market in downtown Hillsboro, but officials deemed hosting the event in the hot temperatures unsafe, according to the shelter's animal behavior and outreach coordinator Jennifer Keene.

"After consulting with our staff veterinarian and community partners, we decided the best course of action is to cancel the event tonight," animal services manager Randy Covey explained in a statement. "It's disappointing, but our top priority is making sure that pets and their owners stay safe and healthy in this extremely hot weather."

As of now, there are no plans to reschedule, but shelter staff will be at the market to talk with people about programs and services offered.
