Joseph Gale Elementary student dies of cancer
A third-grader at Joseph Gale Elementary School in Forest Grove has died after a battle with cancer, the Forest Grove School District announced Thursday, Nov. 1.
"It is with great sadness to inform the community that Jose Bernal, a third grade student at Joseph Gale, has passed away," the district said in a statement. "Our hearts and thoughts go out to his family as they deal with their loss."
The District Flight Team, which works as a school crisis response team, has been providing counseling services and other needed support to students and staff since the loss, the district stated.
"Jose touched the lives of many at Joseph Gale Elementary and his death has touched the hearts of everyone within our school family," said the school's assistant principal Toby O'Handley. "Jose will be deeply missed. We wish his family all the best during this difficult time. ... The Joseph Gale community is working on a way to celebrate Jose's life with a memorial event. We will share details as more information is available."
