Kiwanis International supports children through service leadership programs and more.

Plans are in motion to restart a local chapter of Kiwanis International, a service organization and network of clubs, in Forest Grove.

An organization meeting will be held next Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Prime Time Sports Bar, 4450 Pacific Ave. in Forest Grove, to determine what form and direction the new Forest Grove Kiwanis clubs will take, including the type of projects it will support.

Kiwanis clubs include groups for students and adults. Their unifying goal is to support children, such as through literacy and other educational programs or by donating school supplies.

"Our focus will be on expanding our service leadership programs into the middle (and) elementary schools," local organizer Kathleen Moylan told the News-Times. "These programs will promote leadership at the lower school levels. Our mission is to improve areas through our family of service leadership programs."

"Kids need Kiwanis in Oregon and in communities around the world, so they can grow up in a world where they are happy, healthy, safe and loved," said Jerry Deas, Kiwanis district governor for the Pacific Northwest.

Additionally, the clubs serve a social role as well, bringing together like-minded community members for regular meetings and other events.

"Kiwanis clubs provide a great opportunity to meet new friends who believe in serving their communities, networking with business professionals and making a significant impact on the community through volunteering," Deas said.

The meeting next Wednesday at Prime Time will start at 6 p.m. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Forest Grove previously had a Kiwanis club, but it disbanded in 2015 due to inactivity.

"These clubs need to be nurtured and constantly worked on," Moylan said.
