'Distraction' may be factor in crash that injured cyclist
A local cyclist has been "seriously injured" after he was struck from behind by a pick-up truck, police say.
Washington County Sheriff's deputies responded to Southwest Old Highway 47 near Looking Glass Drive around 4:27 p.m. on Friday, May 31, after receiving reports of the collision, according to a news release.
Authorities say John Worst, a 36-year-old Gaston resident, was riding his bicycle southound on Old Highway 47 when he was "struck from behind" by a small pick-up truck.
"Mr. Worst was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but sustained serious injuries and was transported to Oregon Health Sciences University by a Lifeflight helicopter," deputies say. "He is expected to survive."
WCSO reports that the driver of the pick-up — Forest Grove resident John Reiger Jr., 21 — remained at the scene and did not show signs of impairment, though police say he "may have been distracted."
The investigation continues. Reiger has not been charged with a crime at this time.
