Families across Washington County can bring their little ones, dogs and smiles to Shute Park, 750 S.E. Eighth Ave., on Saturday, July 13, for a day full of free entertainment. The PDX Expos team, spearheaded by creator Jeni Dow, says it's excited to bring a series of summer events to the area.

The event will kick off mid-morning with the opportunity for pet parents to let their dogs shine. Pup owners can take their dorky, adorable or laugh-inducing companions across the stage at 11 a.m. to strut their stuff at the doggie fashion show. A winner, determined by audience applause, will be announced afterward.

Following the canine entertainment, visitors can let out more laughs at 2 p.m. during the family comedy contest.

COURTESY PHOTO - PDX Expos creator Jeni Dow is especially excited to be bringing a family-friendly event back to her hometown area, serving up a variety of activities and entertainment. "Each person will get a five-minute set," Dow said. "We do ask that any comedian keep it family-friendly though, as it is a family event."

And jokes geared toward kiddos might be best, as the winner for this contest will also be decided by audience cheering.

Those who wish to compete in the comedy or doggie fashion show must preregister.

Additional performers including Bach to Rock, Kim's Tae Kwon Do, Hillsboro Dance Center and School of Respect will also take to the stage. "It's going to be an awesome way to see the talents of our local children," Dow said.

Between sets, families can visit the maker's corner, set aside for local crafters to display and sell their goods. Kids can also meet some of their favorite comic book characters, such as Spider-Man and Wonder Woman, while walking through the park.

Dow was born in Forest Grove and grew up in western Washington County before moving to California for schooling. After returning to the area in 2010, Dow says she found many great family events in Portland, but very few on the west side.

"When I was downsized from my position in 2018, my husband and I decided to take my passion for family events and bring it home by creating PDX Expos," Dow said, adding she's excited to bring her experience in family event planning back to her hometown community.
