To be precise, one specific type of therapy isn't for everyone. That's part of the reason there are so many different types of therapy. There's mental health counseling, there's physical therapy, there's acupuncture, there's naturopathic healing, there's massage therapy, there's art therapy, there's even garden therapy — and they are all services that Athena Phillips and Libby DeFehr plan to offer at their new clinic in Forest Grove.

"People's bodies are obviously not disconnected from their heart and from their emotional well-being," Phillips said. "Some people don't get better by talking, so I'm going to offer other ways of treating the body."

She added, "We're treating the whole person. Not to sound clichÉ, but that really is what it's about."

A licensed clinical social worker, Phillips already has a clinic in Portland, Integrative Trauma Treatment Center at 2130 S.W. Jefferson St., Suite 200. Her work also takes her to Rwanda once or twice per year, she noted, and she's preparing to open a clinic in Kigali, the West African country's largest city. But she makes her home in Forest Grove.

"I thought, you know, I'm serving Africa, I'm serving Portland — I've got to serve my own community," Phillips said.

Phillips and DeFehr will cut the ribbon for the ceremonial grand opening of Bloom Integrative Care at 3305 19th Ave., a few blocks east of downtown Forest Grove, this Friday evening, Sept. 13.

The building Bloom Integrative Care is in was previously a doctor's office.

"I wanted something clean and welcoming and comforting and fun," Phillips said. "We like to laugh a lot and have a lot of fun as staff. So all of those things are important to me aside from providing really quality, specialized care."

Bloom will offer a diverse range of services — including primary care, Phillips hopes — because its overarching goal is to make patients feel better, and different approaches work better for different people.

"We are an integrative model, which means that we want to offer a variety of services to address physical and mental health," Phillips said.

Bloom is the first clinic of its kind in the greater Portland area west of Hillsboro.

"This is really housed and providing support for folks in rural areas," Phillips said. "I hope that we can provide a little bit of a boost."

The grand opening ceremony is from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday. The event is catered by Blackdog Bar & Grill. Tours and complimentary acupuncture will be offered.
