New bathrooms at Rogers Park closed after vandalism
About a month after opening them, the Forest Grove Parks and Recreation Department has temporarily closed the restroom facilities at Rogers Park due to vandalism.
Tom Gamble, director of the department, said someone broke the handle on the door, requiring a replacement that wasn't readily available.
He said he hopes to have a replacement handle installed next week.
After the department posted a notice on its Facebook page about the bathroom closure Wednesday, residents responded quickly, expressing frustration.
"Omg didn't they just put them up. Come on ppl let's keep our city nice for once," said Jessica Diaz.
Some people said they anticipated the vandalism before the bathrooms were opened.
"Didn't citizens already explain that this would happen?" said Schala Phador.
The bathrooms, which cost $167,000, according to Gamble, are part of a larger ongoing construction project at the park.
The city is developing plans for a nature play area at the park — Anna & Abby's Yard, named in honor of two Forest Grove girls who were struck and killed by a car in 2013.
Gamble expects construction on the park to begin in the spring. His hope is to have it open by summer 2020.
Anna & Abby's Yard will cost about $1.1 million, with nearly half of that money committed by the Portland-based nonprofit group Harper's Playground.
