The Forest Grove City Library is receiving funds to expand outreach to families in the area.

The library is getting a $4,032 grant from a program called Construyendo Relacione from the State Library of Oregon. The grant will help the library create new relationships in the Forest Grove community, while bolstering ongoing relationships with the families the library already serves, according to officials.

More specifically, it provides funds for the library to distribute free books at a variety of community events between January and August of this year.

"There are few things more important than helping children become lifelong readers," said youth services librarian Nathan Jones. "This grant allows us to get a lot of books into the hands of kids."

Funding from the grant will allow the library to give away over 1,000 books to the community. It also will provide for the library to purchase and give away reading material for its 2020 Summer Incentive program.

The library also plans on partnering with organizations that serve families in Forest Grove. As for volunteers, they hope to reach families at more unorthodox places like laundromats, parks, storefronts and other pop-up locations.
