Cornelius Pass closure expected mid-July
Northwest Cornelius Pass Road will close for major construction in mid-July, Multnomah County announced Friday, June 26.
The closure is expected to last 10 weeks, with a target start date of Monday, July 13.
The construction will continue work that wasn't finished during a months-long closure in 2019. Wildish Standard Paving, the 2019 contractor, will continue on with this project, despite an ongoing dispute with Multnomah County over which group is to blame for the construction delays.
Near Northwest Eighth Avenue and Cornelius Pass, the contractor will replace a culvert for fish passage under the road.
The construction will also realign the road at a section of sharp curves north of Skyline Boulevard.
Drivers coming from Highway 30 to Hillsboro or vice versa will have to take a detour onto Northwest Newberry Road.
For cars, pickup trucks and motorcycles, the detour will be shorter than last year. All the construction south of Skyline Boulevard was completed last year, so drivers will now take Newberry to Skyline and then turn onto Cornelius Pass Road where it intersects with Skyline, rather than crossing over to Old Cornelius Pass Road.
Last summer, some drivers used Northwest Logie Trail Road as their detour route.
Multnomah County is advising drivers to avoid that road because of safety concerns. The road is open to two-way traffic but has a steep section that is too narrow for two cars to pass. The upper section of Logie Trail Road near Skyline will be closed for safety during the Cornelius Pass closure, the Multnomah County press release stated.
Most trucks traveling on Highway 30 can use Highway 26 as an alternate route. Trucks carrying hazardous loads will have to go the long way around on Interstate 205, Interstate 5 and Highway 217, since the Vista Ridge Tunnels through the West Hills are off-limits for vehicles with hazardous materials.
While some local access will be possible, the road will be closed to all traffic in both directions at Northwest Eighth Avenue for the culvert replacement.
Cornelius Pass between Highway 30 and Northwest Germantown Road will also be closed at night on two upcoming weekends to accommodate industrial loads traveling from Longview, Washington, to Intel's Hillsboro campus. Those closures will occur June 26-27 and July 10-11 from 9 p.m. on Friday to 4 a.m. Monday, but will be open during the day, a press release from Multnomah County explained.
