The district said 27% of 52 licensed staff and 27.5% of around 850 students were absent Wednesday, Jan. 12. The district also paused instruction at the high school Monday, Jan. 10.

"Unfortunately, we are experiencing similar staffing issues due to illness at the middle school. We have worked to cover absences with substitutes, internal staff and district office staff, but have again reached the point where we can no longer safely conduct classes with the current available staff," Superintendent David Parker said in a statement.

Spokesperson David Warner said the middle school already has nine teacher openings.

Online instruction for middle school students will start Friday, Jan. 14. The district hopes both the middle and high school will be open again Jan. 24.

Students can pick up lunch during regularly scheduled lunch time at the cafeterias at high school, the middle school, or Harvey Clarke and Echo Shaw Elementary Schools.
