Max Egener and Wade Evanson were among first-place winners in the 2022 Better Newspaper Contest.

FILE - The News-Times raked in awards in the 2022 Better Newspaper Contest.Continuing its tradition of excellence, the News-Times took home major awards in the 2022 Better Newspaper Contest organized by the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association.

Award placements were announced at the ONPA's annual conference in Welches. Among them were first-place awards for reporter Max Egener, who wrote about the role small woodland owners play in regional wildfire planning and resilience, and sports editor Wade Evanson, who wrote about Hillsboro High School state champion wrestler Ayana Medina.

Reporter Dillon Millon was also honored with third place in the general category of Best Writing.

Additionally, the News-Times Editorial Board was awarded second place for Best Editorial.

The News-Times competes in circulation group E. Its sister paper, The Times of Beaverton, Tigard, Tualatin & Sherwood, received the prestigious General Excellence award in that circulation group in this year's contest as well.

Pamplin Community Heroes, which recognized the contributions of more than two dozen people from throughout the Portland area, the North Willamette Valley and Central Oregon, also received second place for Best Special Section or Issue.

This year, members of the Maine Press Association served as judges of the Better Newspaper Contest, which is held annually.
