In three horrific mass shootings across the country, 34 people were senselessly gunned down.

Thirty-four people were shot and killed by three different gunmen in three different mass shootings in the United States last week.

It's too easy to let these events fade into the background and become routine. It's too easy, as the media has found in covering acts of terrorism and carnage around the world, to focus on the names and motives of the killers rather than remembering the names of the people they took away from their loved ones.

The News-Times and Hillsboro Tribune remember:

• Trevor Irby, 25. He was attending the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California, when a gunman killed him.

• Stephen Romero, 6. He was enjoying the Gilroy Garlic Festival when a gunman killed him.

• Keyla Salazar, 13. She was with her family at the Gilroy Garlic Festival when a gunman killed her.

These men, women and children didn't simply "die," as if by natural causes or an act of God. They were killed — taken away from the life they lived and the people they loved by the deliberate act of another person, acting out of hate and without regard for the humanity of these 34 people, the dozens more who were injured, and the thousands who are suffering through the loss of someone who was important to them.

Before we think about how to solve the scourge of gun violence and terrorism, while we talk about how to solve the scourge of gun violence and terrorism, and after we resolve to solve the scourge of gun violence and terrorism, these should be the names on our lips.
