Letter: Impeachment a distraction from health policy
Congress is distracted from doing real work for us.
This country needs a single-payer universal health insurance program — something like Medicare but applied to every citizen (note I did not say "everybody"). It would be relatively easy to extend the current Medicare system to cover everybody and pay for it by raising the payroll tax (FICA).
If you earn income in the U.S., you would be paying for the enhanced Medicare whether you are a legal citizen or not, but those insurance benefits would not be available to non-citizens. Non-citizens could pay for their medical expenditures using the insurance they enjoy in their native country, or they could pay for them out of their private funds.
Simply show up at a medical service provider, show them your photo ID showing proof of citizenship, and get treated — wherever you choose to go.
People would be healthier, which would lead to lower overall expenditures (sickness treated early costs less). So why isn't Congress focusing on that instead of the insane waste of time pushing for impeachment? There is no chance the president will be convicted in the Senate. Call your representatives and senators and complain about it, and encourage them to get on with the business of creating a nationalized health insurance program.
