Women need access to safe, legal abortion

I have supported a woman's right to reproductive choice since 1977.

I attended the National Women's Conference in Houston, Texas and my life was changed forever. The 52 words of the Equal Rights Amendment, and seeing white, right-wing, religious fanatics attack women's right to choose made me a radical feminist.

I am now 74.

Abortion is not a choice that women make because they want to. No one could ever want an abortion. But birth control failure, rape, incest, drunken sex, or other stupid behavior can result in fertilization of an egg. Abortion is sometimes necessary.

Most females over 14 can get pregnant very, very, very easily. The term "falling off a log" comes to mind.

You can't compare any other situation to pregnancy. Men cannot have a complete concept of the depth and breadth and "overwhelming-ness" of maternal responsibility — responsibility that has only grown more daunting as our society has weakened, our climate has crashed, and hatred and violence have reigned supreme.

When a soldier signs up for war, they know they are going to be killing innocents and the enemy. They will do so if they are ordered.

Doctors who perform abortions know that they signed up for attending to the health needs of vulnerable women, poor women, ignorant women, smart women, all women.

Please support a woman's right to control her own womb. Thank you.

Tolling is just part of what's needed for I-5 bridge

Rep. Susan McLain outlined in detail the current status of the I-5 Bridge Replacement initiative.

Although controversial to many, I am confident she is correct that tolling is a key element in providing funding in addition to taxes, which we all pay.

Tolling focuses primarily on regular users, of which I am not; and yet we all benefit immensely from the people, services and products traveling north and south across the I-5 bridge on a daily basis.

The I-5 Bridge Replacement requires sacrifice from the entire "community."

Late 2025 or early 2026, the projection for when tolling begins, is not far off. How do we non-users pay our fair share?
