COURTESY PHOTO: CHARLENE MURDOCK - Dave Ferrier, owner and baker of Slow Rise Bakehouse in Forest Grove, will be at the event with various baked goods made using flour from Spiesschaert Farms.This Saturday, Sept. 22, marks the second annual Tuality Plains Celebrate Great (Local) Grains event in Forest Grove.

The free, family-friendly event, which is being held at Spiesschaert Farms, 3150 N.W. Thatcher Road, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., began as an effort to encourage farmers to grow local foods, and community members to support local farmers, said coordinator Charlene Murdock.

It is a proposal for farmers both large and small to consider growing grains that would be used locally, like freshly milled flour for bakeries and malted grains for breweries and distilleries, she said.

The event will include baked goods from Slow Rise Bakehouse made with flour from Spiesschaert Farms, whiskey from Dogwood Distilling made with rye and honey from the farms, hot dogs from Audaddy's on buns from Slow Rise, and tastings and cooking displays from many other local companies using locally-grown products.

There will also be baking and craft activities for children, as well as horse drawn wagon rides through the farm and riparian zone. Live music from Waltz Jammers will accompany the day-long event.

Murdock, the executive director of nonprofit Foodways at Nana Cardoon, has been involved in many efforts to promote locally-grown food, she said, something that is near and dear to her heart.

"This is an effort to transition some of our farmland to raising food for our community," she said. "It seems like a simple thing to do, but we've not been doing that now for several generations and there's an interest in bringing it back."

There will also be a smaller-scale preview of the event at Spiesschaert Farms on Thursday, Sept. 20, with tastings and sips.
