2019 Stars in the Grove preview
Stars in the Grove, Forest Grove's community variety show, wants to showcase the town's talent for its sixth year at Taylor-Meade Performing Arts Center this weekend.
Saturday, Feb. 23, at 7:30 p.m., audiences can expect dancing and singing performances from young and old, with music ranging from accordion, to Chopin, to acapella.
The night will begin with a performance of "Beloved" by Alyssa Stolley and Kalani Burke, with vocalists covering artists like Katy Perry, Alicia Keys, Jason Mraz and more.
The evening is co-sponsored by the Forest Grove Chamber of Commerce, the Forest Grove News-Times and Pacific University.
Proceeds directly fund the local playhouse, Theatre in the Grove, which has had a legacy in town for 50 years as a community arts facilitator.
Howard Sullivan, the president of the Forest Grove Chamber of Commerce, said he thinks this year will be a stand-out event.
"I was always impressed at the high school level," said Sullivan, the former activities director at Forest Grove High School . "But when I took this job six years ago, I've seen how amazing the talent is in our community. This event shows the richness that is Forest Grove."
In the past, the benefit show has funded other organizations like the Forest Grove Arts Commission in 2018.
"The arts are always important for this reason," Sullivan said. "Being at Forest Grove High School for 33 years, I saw many budgets where the things that got cut was the arts. I saw classes leave, and this community pick up, like Theatre in the Grove and Valley Art."
While the performers hail from Forest Grove, Banks, Gaston and Cornelius, the annual talent show has sparked national acts in the past. The sister duo Twisted Sister Circus, a contortionist group, have moved on to perform across the country, appearing on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."
Tickets cost $10 for adults and $7 for youth and senior citizens.
Tickets are available in advance at the chamber of commerce office and the Pacific University Box Office, as well as at the door.
