Sundown Grand Ol' Country Festival returns to Forest Grove July 28 at Grand Lodge.

COURTESY PHOTO - McMenamins hosts an outdoor country music festival packed with multiple live music acts, beer tastings, a marketplace and line dancing. The Sundown Grand Ol' Country Fest, now three years running, was created because McMenamins noticed it didn't offer opportunities for country music lovers to listen to their favorite genre.

"We do a lot of different music in our company, anything from rock to jazz to even opera," said Lori Killen, a talent buyer for the company. "There are a lot of country music fans on the outskirts of the Portland area, and we recognized through the programming at Grand Lodge in Forest Grove during the week, that a lot of the feedback we were getting from customers is they wanted to hear country music."

Killen began booking singer-songwriters throughout the week to see what the town's response would be, thus placing the stepping stones for what is now Sundown, she said.

"We wanted to share local and regional talent," Killen said. "There are so many great ones out there, and I'm excited that our headliners are women in country."

This year's free Sundown Grand Ol' Country Fest will be from 1-10 p.m. Sunday, July 28, at the Grand Lodge, spread over the property's sprawling green lawn and three stages. Lawn games will be provided for all ages. A beer tasting event, for ages 21 and over, also is slated, and costs $20 for a glass and 10 tokens.

The music lineup features some out-of-town visitors and local favorites, including Pacific Northwest local and "American Idol" finalist Britnee Kellogg.

This year, the newest addition is the "Western Marketplace," with local vendors goods from Xylem Jewelry, Dolls N Trolls Vintage and Hawk Leather Goods.

"We wanted to create something for Forest Grove and become a central hub," Killen said. "We have this big lawn, and we wanted to make use of the space there for people to put their blankets out and explore."
