Downtown event gets off to fresh start in October with new leadership, branding.

The Hillsboro First Tuesday Art Walk, a staple in the downtown area for over 15 years, ushers in new leadership as it rebrands and relaunches this October.

For years, the Hillsboro Downtown Partnership organized the multi-location evening celebrating music, art and entertainment.

Now, an independent committee of business owners, residents and artists are envisioning a new future of what the Art Walk will look like moving forward, starting with introducing new venues to the regular lineup.

Five new locations will be added, including The Cotton Cure, Puppernickel, Collective Kitchen, D'anu Tasting Room & Wine Bar and Crystal Heart Boutiques.

Norman Baldwin, owner of Crystal Heart, is one of the new committee members imagining what can make the Art Walk grow in size.

Earlier this summer, the committee met to determine what was working and not working, and most of what the Art Walk has been will stay the same, including the Tuesday time slot of 5 to 8 p.m.

Culinary arts will be a part of the walk, growing past presenting traditional art like oil paintings. Baldwin would like to see the definition of art expanded and more artists applying to be involved, he said.

In addition to more artists and venues, Baldwin says volunteers will be outside each participating venue to guide people around town.

"We want to have more and more people given the opportunity to be involved," Baldwin said.

One of the venues, the Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center, will host its ArtFest 2019 at the First Tuesday Art Walk as a way to kick off Hillsboro Arts Month, which is the whole month of October. From 5 to 8 p.m., stage performances, local artists and organizations, art activities, and food trucks will be on-site.
