Cornelius' first-ever citywide chalk art event has been postponed due to hazardous air quality conditions.
The event, called "Color Cornelius," was scheduled to take place throughout the week starting Sept. 7 and ending with award announcements Saturday, Sept. 12.
City Manager Rob Drake says the city instead plans to announce awards on Saturday, Sept. 19.
The Cornelius Youth Advisory Council organized the event to promote the city through citywide public art while being conscious of the coronavirus pandemic.
Participants were directed to create chalk art representing Cornelius outside their homes on the sidewalks or street and submit photos to the city using the hashtag #ColorCornelius for judging.
The Cornelius Youth Advisory Council and Mayor Jef Dalin will each pick two winners who will receive a gift card to a local business.
Free drawing kits, containing colored chalk, two battery-powered votive candles and bags to highlight the homeowners' participation, a real estate-sized sign and wire stake to promote the contest, and a rules/information sheet, will be provided by the city once facilities reopen.
