Pacific adds Bajema, Perez to grid coach staff
Pacific University head football coach Keith Buckley has added former Boxer standouts Jeff Bajema and Jack Perez to the coaching staff as assistant coaches.
Bajema, who is originally from Burlington, Wash., ended his Pacific career last fall, tying the single-season school record with 14 tackles-for-loss to lead the Boxers en route to first-team all-Northwest Conference honors for a third-straight year.
He had three multi-sack games and forced three fumbles from his defensive end position in 2016. Plus, Bajema was selected to and participated in the National Bowl Game, an annual post-season college football all-star game consisting of top players from Non-FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) schools in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Perez, who is originally from Petaluma, California, and graduated in 2016, wrapped up his playing days with multiple honors, including Pacific Male Athlete of the Year as well as being the first player in program history to be named first team All-American (American Football Coaches Association) and to be selected All-American twice in the same year.
Perez was also named first team all-West Region by D3football.com and first team all-Northwest Conference after making a school record 123 tackles. He was also selected as the NWC Defensive Player of the Year.
Both Bajema and Perez were named to the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society for their efforts in the classroom.
"Jack and Jeff will go down as two of the best at their positions to ever wear a Boxer uniform," said Buckley. "Their competitiveness and knowledge of our defensive package will be a great benefit to every player on the roster. I am excited to see the same work ethic on the coaching side that they showed as tremendous players during their career."
Practices for the 2017 Pacific University football season will start on Friday, Aug. 11. The 2017 schedule includes a full slate of Northwest Conference games as well as non-conference matchups against the University of Dubuque (Saturday, Sept. 9, at 5 p.m.) and Occidental College (Saturday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m.).
Also on the schedule is an exhibition game against the Lewis-Clark Valley Loggers on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. at the new Ledbetter Field.
