Forest Grove Little League Majors compete at softball tournament
The Forest Grove Little League Majors softball all-stars competed in last week's Oregon District 4 tournament at Alpenrose Dairy.
Despite dropping all three of their games in pool play against Lake Oswego, South Beaverton and Willow Creek, it remained a successful season for the 12 girls honored by the league to represent Forest Grove in the event.
"The girls as a whole have been looking forward to this road to All Stars," coach Tiffany Cook said. "I am proud of how hard as a team they worked to grow and learn from their coaches and teammates."
The girls were selected by league coaches based off of their regular season performance, and were required to play in a minimum of 60 percent of their regular season games to be eligible.
While they would've obviously preferred to win, Cook said the week was not a loss because there were more than a fair share of positives.
"As we all know the game isn't always about winning," she said. "While there wasn't a lot of winning with the All Star season, I appreciated the positives the girls pulled out each night as we recapped the game. Softball has brought each of them more than just the skills of the game but [also] life skills of making friends, working with peers and respecting others."
The coach said she was proud of each and every one of the girls who participated, but also pointed out a couple athletes she said exemplified what their team was about.
She mentioned Rory Fix as someone who committed herself during and beyond the season to work on her craft. And Brylee Davis, who also put her trust in the coaching staff and has shown the type of work ethic Cook says will make her a standout down the line.
"This is her (Davis) first year pitching and she has stepped up and devoted a ton of time to work on her skills," Cook said. "She has been receptive to me as a new coach for her and trusted me to help guide her in batting. She hasn't been playing long, but her love for the game has shown that this kid will be someone to watch for as she gets older and continues to play softball."
The following girls were members of the team: Malaya Anzo, Rory Fix, McKenzie Fields, Brylee Davis, Allie Lagunas, Ayla Marsh, Paola Reyes, Lyla Salter, Chloe Schaumburg, Maliah Shurts, Sirrea Smith and Grace Sommers. Coaches included Tiffany Cook, Mitchell Bigsby and Donald Schaumburg.
