The USL Championship, the league to which the Portland Timbers 2 belong, said Thursday, March 12, that it will suspend play for at least 30 days over concerns about the spread of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19, a respiratory illness.

Timbers 2 (0-1) played Phoenix Rising FC in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Saturday, March 7.

T2 was set to play El Paso Locomotive FC in El Paso, Texas, this coming Saturday, March 14, before coming to Hillsboro Stadium for its home opener Sunday, March 22. However, both of those games have been postponed to a date uncertain.

This is the first year that T2 has been based in Hillsboro, part of a partnership with the Hillsboro Hops, who play at next-door Ron Tonkin Field.

T2 and Hops officials did not respond to a request for comment Thursday.

Major League Soccer also announced it will suspend the season Thursday for at least 30 days. The Timbers (1-0) were set to play the New England Revolution Sunday, March 15, in Foxborough, Massachusetts. That game has also been suspended.
