Local area softball players earn all-state honors
In what can only be described as a strange season — to say the least — Oregon's Season 3 (traditionally spring sports) athletes persevered despite masks, shortened seasons, and limited participation.
While there were no state champions, all-state teams in all classifications were announced this past week and Washington County athletes were well-represented, with 25 different players and nine different schools represented.
Tigard, led by junior pitcher Makenna Reid, boasted three 6A classification honorees. The Tigers won the Three Rivers League with a 16-2 overall record, and Reid finished the season with a 15-2 individual mark and a 1.10 ERA, while striking out 218 and walking just 31, along with tossing two no-hitters.
Jesuit had four honorees, led by senior pitcher Ellie McClaskey.
Mountainside tallied three selections, including sophomore shortstop/outfielder Ashley Goodale.
And Southridge, Liberty, Tualatin and Metro League champion Westview tallied two honorees apiece. Westview was led by senior shortstop Emma Antich, who helped the Wildcats to a 14-5 overall record and 11-1 league mark.
Hillsboro Spartans outfielder Kiara McCrea was a 5A classification first-team selection for the second time, following her 2019 honor coupled with the that season's State Player of the Year award. McCrea was one of three Spartan honorees this year.
In the 4A classification, Banks tallied four honorees, led by first team selections Maddy Vandehey and Haile Frame, both seniors. Vandehey batted .451 for the Braves, and Frame hit .310 with a .463 on-base percentage from her outfield position, leading Banks to a 15-1 overall record and Cowapa League title.
