Diamond Beat: Seattle wins three of four vs. Oakland
We got our bases covered — here's a daily update from the Mariners and other teams and players:
SUNDAY, JULY 25
Mariners 4, Athletics 3 — Seattle (54-46) won three of four games against Oakland at T-Mobile Park, and now faces Houston in three home games.
They are 1 1/2 games behind Oakland for the second wild card spot in the American League.
Seattle scored four runs in the third inning. Kyle Seager had a two-runs single and Luis Torrens and Tom Murphy RBI singles. Marco Gonzales had a solid start, and four Seattle relievers helped earn the win. Matt Olson and Seth Brown homered for Oakland.
The Mariners moved to 23-8 in one-run games.
Emeralds 6, Hops 5 — Eugene scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sean Roby's two-run double to beat visiting Hillsboro (31-39).
Jorge Barrosa hit a three-run homer and Blaze Alexander a solo shot for Hillsboro.
Carson Kelly, the former Westview High star and player on the parent Arizona Diamondbacks, is doing a rehab stint with Hillsboro. He'll play with the Hops in the first two games of a six-game home series against Tri-City on Tuesday and Wednesday at Ron Tonkin Field.
AquaSox 10, Canadians 1 — Everett routed Vancouver (33-39) at Ron Tonkin Field. Everett's Kaden Polcovich had a great game, going 2-for-2 with three walks, two runs scored and two RBIs. He and Jake Anchia each homered.
Vancouver next plays a six-game series at Spokane.
SATURDAY, JULY 24
Mariners 5, Athletics 4 — Jarred Kelenic, who had walked, scored the game-winning run on Lee Trivino's wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Aramis Garcia had tied it at 4-4 for Oakland with a ninth-inning homer.
Mitch Haniger hit two homers for Seattle and went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Hops 3, Emeralds 2 — At Eugene, Hillsboro's Drey Jameson allowed four hits and one run while striking out 11 in six innings for the win against Eugene.
Canadians 7, AquaSox 6 — Vancouver scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat Everett at Ron Tonkin Field. Eugene had scored a run in the top of the inning to lead 6-5, but Vancouver won with runs scored on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a bases-loaded walk. Sebastian Espino homered for Vancouver.
Mariners 4, Athletics 3 — Dylan Moore scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning as Seattle beat Oakland at T-Mobile Park.
Cal Raleigh hit a two-run homer and Luis Torrens a solo shot for the Mariners. Matt Chapman and Matt Olson each hit solo homers for Oakland.
Seattle starter Yusei Kikuchi struck out 12 in six innings.
Hops 10, Emeralds 9 — Hillsboro scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to win at Eugene.
Eduardo Diaz went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. The six hitters at the bottom of the Hillsboro lineup each had at least one RBI.
AquaSox 8, Canadians 3 — At Ron Tonkin Field, Everett's Jake Anchia went 2-for-4 with six RBIs (with a grand slam homer) and two runs scored.
THURSDAY, JULY 22
Athletics 4, Mariners 1 — Seattle opened a seven-game homestand against Oakland and Houston with a loss, as Oakland's Sean Manaea gave up three hits and one run (Tom Murphy's solo shot) and struck out 13 in seven innings.
Ramon Laureano had two hits and two RBIs for the Athletics.
Emeralds 4, Hops 3 — At Eugene, the home team's Carter Aldrete hit a two-run homer and Brett Auerbach a solo shot.
Hillsboro starter Slade Cecconi was great, allowing four hits and one run while striking out 10 and walking none in seven innings.
AquaSox 8, Canadians 2 — At Ron Tonkin Field, Everett's Jack Larsen went 2-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored and three RBIs. Dariel Gomez also homered, off Vancouver starter CJ Van Eyk, who gave up four hits and three runs while striking out nine in five innings.
Black Bears 2, Pickles 0 — Cowlitz won its home West Coast League series against Portland, which had only five singles (three by Justin DeCriscio).
The Pickles (19-14) play nonleague games against Gresham GreyWolves on Saturday and Portland Rosebuds on Sunday at Walker Stadium.
Rockies 6, Mariners 3 — Seattle hit three solo homers — by Kyle Seager, Mitch Haniger and Luis Torrens — but Colorado prevailed on its home field. Dom Nunez had a bases-clearing double in a five-run first inning for the Rockies off Seattle's Keynan Middleton.
Colorado starter Austin Gomber allowed three hits in six innings — the Mariners' homers.
The Mariners (51-45) next host Oakland for four games and Houston for three at T-Mobile Park — the two teams ahead of them in the American League West Division.
Emeralds 5, Hops 4 — Dominic Canzone homered and Cam Coursey had two RBIs but Hillsboro lost at Eugene. Brett Auerbach and Ricardo Genoves hit solo homers for the Emeralds.
AquaSox 6, Canadians 2 — At Ron Tonkin Field, Cade Marlowe had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored for Everett, and Stephen Kolek allowed four hits and one run while striking out seven in five innings. Tanner Morris homered for Vancouver.
Black Bears 9, Pickles 1 — Host Cowlitz scored three runs in the first inning, held Portland to four hits and cruised to the win. The West Coast League series concludes Thursday.
Mariners 6, Rockies 4 — Seattle won the first of two games at Colorado. Cal Raleigh and Ty France each hit two-run doubles and Dylan Moore hit a two-run homer. Marco Gonzales gave up six hits and two runs in five innings for his second win of the season.
Hops 3, Emeralds 2 — At Eugene, Hillsboro won with a three-run fifth inning (two on a Dominic Canzone homer) and a standout performance by pitcher Blake Walston, who gave up two hits and one run (a homer) and struck out 11 and walked one in eight innings.
AquaSox 6, Canadians 5, 11 innings — Everett outlasted Vancouver at Ron Tonkin Field, scoring a run in the 11th inning on Cody Grosse's RBI single.
The teams had scored two runs each in the 10th inning, with Vancouver's Tanner Morris coming through in the clutch again with a two-run double to tie it in the bottom of the inning. Earlier, he had tied it at 3-3 with an RBI single in the eighth inning.
Luis De Los Santos homered for Vancouver.
Pickles 8, Black Bears 2 — Portland had 10 hits, as Jake Morrow had three hits and two runs scored, Leo Mosby had a two-run homer and Jake Jablonski went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored in a win at Cowlitz. Evan Tomlinson gave up three hits and no runs in four innings.
