Driver arrested in hit and run involving Forest Grove bicyclist
A Forest Grove-area man has been arrested after police say he crashed his car into a bicyclist near Forest Grove last weekend.
William Offinga, 55, was arrested Thursday, May 16 and charged with reckless driving and felony hit and run.
Washington County sheriff's deputies were called to Northwest Hillside Road and Clapshaw Hill Road at about 2 p.m., May 11 after a bicyclist stopped on the side of the road was struck by a newer Mercedes convertible. The bicyclist was stopped on the shoulder of the road checking a map when the vehicle knocked him to the ground.
The vehicle drove away and made no attempt to stop or check on the bicycling, whose leg was bleeding and clothes were torn in the crash, deputies said.
According to the Sheriff's office, the driver of the vehicle made a rude gesture at the bicyclist as he sped off.
Several tips led Sheriff Office detectives to Offinga's home outside Forest Grove. Investigators said a vehicle matching the description was found on the property with damage consistent with the crash.
Deputies said a motorcyclist reported being nearly run off the road by the same vehicle that same week. The vehicle was allegedly driving recklessly and swerving into oncoming lanes of traffic on Northwest Old Clapshaw Hill Road.
