The Kia Company started in 1944 in South Korea, manufacturing steel tubing, bicycle frames and hand made parts. This led to scooters and then motorcycles and finally trucks. In the 1970's Kia was making internal combustion engines and building cars for other companies like Peugeot and Fiat in their Sohari plant.
Ford, which at the time owned Mazda, and Kia began working together in 1986 to produce the Pride and export it to North America.
In 1991 Kia announces it will enter the U.S market, starting in Portland and moving east selling Sephia and Sportage models.
The Asian financial crisis caused Kia to file for bankruptcy in 1997. Hyundai and Ford fought for control of the company with Hyundai coming out on top.
Today Kia is a subsidiary of the Hyundai-Kia Automotive group, is the 5th largest import brand and sells in 172 countries. Kia employs 43,000 people worldwide at 13 plants and produces 1.5 million vehicles annually.
