How about making one of your New Year Resolutions be to perform PREVENTATIVE maintenance on your vehicle! The word Preventative means; care taken in advance, to hinder, to prevent harm or secure good, safeguard and failsafe.

For our cars this means replacing parts before they fail and exchanging the fluids often so that they are kept clean. Let's use oil for an example. Oil is designed to clean and lubricate. Clean oil reduces friction and sludging of the working parts inside of the engine. Use the oil that is recommended by the manufacturer and keep it clean. Although for years we changed the oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles, today's vehicles generally require a synthetic blend or a full synthetic oil which is a better quality product. Does this mean the car can now go 5,000, 7,500 or 10,000 miles plus in between oil changes? There are some manufacturers that are putting those mileage intervals on their oil change requirements. The problem is that most consumers are not checking oil level or condition in between oil changes, so the vehicles are running low on oil and have a lack of lubrication that is causing excessive wear on the engine. Oil that is really dirty has lost its lubrication properties and develops sludge that can clog small diameter oil passages within the engine, like the oil fed actuators and the solenoids which control the timing of the engine.

Preventative maintenance is truly the KEY to Safety, Reliability, Performance and Longevity. Happy Motoring!
