It's hard to believe that summer 2019 has come and gone. It's now September and time to start thinking about packing up the summer stuff and getting ready for bonfires, football and hot cocoa.

With fall just around the corner and winter not far behind, button up the summer HVAC system and prep the furnace for cold weather. Here are 5 things you should do this fall:

Change the air filter. It's a good idea to pop in a new, fresh filter.

Clear the area. Clearing weeds or other foliage around the outdoor unit is a good idea. Debris can attract bugs or ants or other critters looking to hunker down inside your outdoor unit during cold weather

Adjust the thermostat. The house may now be empty all day, and evenings tend to get a bit cooler. Set the temperatures to comfortable settings that make sense with the outside temps at different times of the day.

Get a professional furnace evaluation. If your system is 20 years or older or you remodeled, have a professional HVAC tech come and evaluate whether you need an updated system. A new system will save you utility costs and will ensure proper heating and ventilation for your home.

Schedule a fall furnace tune-up. Get your furnace ready for the long winter ahead. A professional tune-up will make sure the unit is clean and running efficiently and safely.  A yearly tune-up will also keep your warranty valid.
