Walt Disney and Portland
Did you know that Walt Disney had ties to Portland? Walt's parents Flora and Elias once lived on SE Morrison Street in Portland. His sister Ruth Disney lived in Portland until her death in 1995 and is buried in Portland.
In 1938, after the success of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", Walt and his brother Roy bought their parents a home in North Hollywood. Shorty after moving in, Flora complained of fumes in the home, coming from the furnace. Walt had workers from his studio come and attempt to repair the furnace. Because the furnace was not repaired correctly, Walt's mother Flora, 70, died from asphyxiation from carbon monoxide coming from the furnace.
This haunted Walt for the rest of his life. It is said that the reason that several of his films do not have parents, more specifically a mom character, is because of the above tragic event.
Natural gas is non-toxic and is the cleanest burning fossil fuel available, but if natural gas isn't burning properly or the appliance has a mechanical problem, it could create a hazard.
The best way to prevent CO poisoning is to have your gas furnace inspected regularly by a qualified technician, especially if you have an older furnace and are concerned about CO. Installing and properly maintaining a UL approved carbon monoxide detector can alert you when a certain level of carbon monoxide is in the air but should not replace regular maintenance on your heating system.
