Sleeping as We Age: What Causes Insomnia?
Our sleep patterns change as we age. We tend to get tired more easily, wake up earlier, and sleep less throughout the night. However, disturbed sleep, waking up less rested, and chronic insomnia are not part of the natural aging process. If you are experiencing insomnia or sleep problems as you age, it may be caused by these underlying issues:
Poor sleep habits: This includes sleeping at irregular hours, napping, consuming alcohol or heavy food before bed, and falling asleep with the T.V. or radio on.
Pain or medical conditions: Health conditions such as a frequent need to urinate, body pains and aches, asthma, and even heart burn can cause sleep problems. If these issues persist, be sure to speak with your doctor about possible solutions.
Lack of exercise: Believe it or not, infrequent exercise can cause fatigue. Staying active throughout the day with regular exercise will help you feel more tired when it's time for bed.
Stress: Significant life changes can cause excess stress, leading to disturbed sleep. If you are experiencing higher levels of stress than usual, be sure to speak with someone about your symptoms.
Lack of engagement: Social engagement with family and friends can keep your energy levels up throughout the day and prepare you for a restful sleep.
